271 "MY NAME IS CLARISSA JANE WILCOX. I WAS BORN IN CARMI, WHITE COUNTY, ILLINOIS, ON OCTOBER FIRST, 1821. I HAD A TWIN BROTHER, BUT HE DIED AT BIRTH. MY PARENTS ARE HAZARD WILCOX JR. AND SARAH SEELEY [THE CORRECT SPELLING IS UNKNOWN]. MY SEELEY GRANDPARENTS WERE AUGUSTUS SEELEY AND MARY BRISBANE. MY WILCOX GRANDPARENTS WERE HAZARD WILCOX SR. AND EUNICE SABRAH WATSON. BEYOND THAT I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T KNOW HOW MY GRANDMOTHER, SARAH SEELEY, TIES IN WITH YOUR SEELY LINE, BUT THE TWO LINES PROBABLY COME TOGETHER BACK SOMEPLACE. I WAS BAPTIZED INTO THE CHURCH WHEN I WAS TWELVE YEARS OLD. I THINK THE DATE WAS MAY 20, 1833. ALONG ABOUT THAT TIME, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE CENTER STAKE OF ZION WOULD BE IN JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI, AND THAT WE SHOULD GATHER THERE, SO WE DID. BUT WE HADN'T BEEN THERE LONG, WHEN WE--ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE--THAT IS, ALL THE SAINTS, WERE DRIVEN OUT, EXCEPT SOME WHO WOULDN'T STAND UP TO THE MOB AN' THEY'D DENY THAT JOSEPH SMITH WAS A PROPHET, JUST SO THE MOB WOULDN'T BOTHER THEM.
"ANYWAY, THE MOBBINGS AND THE BURNINGS GOT TO BE SO BAD IN JACKSON COUNTY THAT IN NOVEMBER OF 1833, WE WERE COMPELLED TO LEAVE IN ORDER TO PRESERVE OUR LIVES. THE SAINTS MOVED TO NEIGHBORING COUNTIES, BUT OUR FAMILY MOVED TO CLAY COUNTY. WE (THE SAINTS) WERE FRIENDLESS AND PENNILESS, AND THE CITIZENS OF CLAY COUNTY TOOK PITY ON US AND SAID WE COULD STAY IN THEIR COUNTY UNTIL THINGS WERE SETTLED IN JACKSON COUNTY AND WE COULD RETURN THERE; OR UNTIL WE FOUND ANOTHER PERMANENT LOCATION. WELL, OUR LEADERS SPENT THE NEXT TWO AND A HALF YEARS APPEALING TO THE GOVERNOR OF MISSOURI, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WOULD LISTEN--TRYING TO GET OUR LANDS REINSTATED TO US, SO WE COULD RETURN TO JACKSON COUNTY, BUT WE NEVER DID GET REINSTATED; NOT EVEN IN A LAND WITH A CONSTITUTION THAT GUARANTEES TO ITS CITIZENS THE RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND PROPERTY.
"MOBS CONTINUED TO ROAM THE COUNTRYSIDE, HARASSING THE SAINTS, AND THINGS KEPT GETTING WORSE IN CLAY COUNTY. MOTHER AND I SPENT MANY EVENINGS DISCUSSING WHAT WOULD BECOME OF US. SHE WAS A WIDOW; I WAS A TEENAGE GIRL. SOMETIMES WE FELT THAT WE WERE JUST A BURDEN ON THE CHURCH. FINALLY IN JUNE OF 1836, THE CITIZENS OF CLAY COUNTY FIGURED WE HAD STAYED LONG ENOUGH. THEY WERE DECENT ABOUT IT, BUT THEY ASKED US TO MOVE OUT OF THEIR COUNTY. OUR LEADERS AGREED THAT THE SAINTS WOULD MOVE OUT. OUR FAMILY MOVED INTO RAY COUNTY IN THE SUMMER OF 1836. WE STAYED THERE FOR ABOUT A YEAR, AND THEN WE MOVED TO FAR WEST IN 1837.
"I REMEMBER WHEN THE SAINTS WERE DRIVEN OUT OF DEWITT AND THEIR CARAVAN CAME DRAGGING INTO FAR WEST. THEY WERE TRULY A PITIFUL LOOKING SIGHT. IT MADE ME CRY INSIDE TO SEE THEM. WE TOOK A FAMILY INTO OUR HOME, FED THEM, HEATED TUBS OF WATER SO THEY COULD EACH HAVE A BATH--GAVE THEM OUR BEDS AND THEN WHILE THEY SLEPT, WE WASHED THEIR CLOTHES. THEY CALLED ME AND MOTHER "ANGELS OF MERCY."
"I DON'T REMEMBER MEETING WELLINGTON OR DAVID DURING OUR STAY IN FAR WEST. IT COULD BE THAT WE ATTENDED THE SAME MEETINGS--MAYBE I EVEN SAW THEM AT A DANCE. BUT IF I DID SEE THEM, THEY WERE JUST FACES IN THE CROWD. THERE WERE SO MANY NEW FACES COMING INTO FAR WEST AT THAT TIME.
"I REMEMBER WHEN FAR WEST WAS UNDER SIEGE FROM THE MOB AND COLONEL HINKLE DECEIVED THE PROPHET AND LURED HIM OUT OF THE CITY, AND GENERAL LUCAS TOOK HIM PRISONER. I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS VERY WELL. I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT COL. HINKLE WAS A RATHER DASHING YOUNG MAN, UNTIL HE DID THAT, AND THEN I COULDN'T STAND THE SIGHT OF HIM. I REMEMBER ONE DAY I WAS WALKING ALONG MAIN STREET, AND HE CAME ALONG RIDING HIS FANCY HORSE. I DIDN'T LOOK AT HIM, BUT HE SPOKE TO ME. IN A VOICE DRIPPING WITH HONEY, HE SAID, 'GOOD MORNING, MISS WILCOX.' I PRETENDED NOT TO HEAR HIM, AND I TURNED AWAY.
"SOON AFTER THAT WE WERE EVACUATED FROM FAR WEST AND CONVEYED TO QUINCY, ILLINOIS, WHERE WE STAYED UNTIL SPRING OF 1839. THEN WE MOVED TO CHARLESTON, WHICH WAS IN LEE COUNTY, IOWA.
"I HAD A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I DON'T REMEMBER THE YEAR, BUT WHILE LIVING IN CHARLESTON, IOWA, I CAME VERY NEAR TO BECOMING AN INVALID FOR LIFE. I WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT THROUGH THE TRUNK OF MY BODY. I WAS TORN UP BAD INSIDE. IT WAS GHASTLY! I WAS RIGHT NEAR DEATH'S DOOR, AND I COULD HAVE SLIPPED THROUGH EASILY. THE DOCTOR SAID THAT IF I LIVED I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BEAR CHILDREN. I ASKED FOR A BLESSING, AND SO THE ELDERS OF THE CHURCH WERE CALLED, AND ELDER MOSES GIFFORD ADMINISTERED TO ME. HE PROMISED ME THAT I WOULD GET WELL, AND THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN. I HAD COMPLETE FAITH THAT I WOULD GET WELL, AND THAT I WOULD HEAL PROPERLY. AND I DID.
"I REMEMBER IN 1841 WHEN THE SEELYE FAMILY FIRST MOVED TO NASHVILLE AND SOON AFTER THAT WAS WHEN I FIRST MET JUSTUS WELLINGTON SEELYE. WE COURTED FOR A TIME, AND I REMEMBER THE NIGHT HE PROPOSED. WELLINGTON HAD COME IN HIS BUGGY FROM NASHVILLE TO CHARLESTON TO TAKE ME TO A SQUARE DANCE, AND I COULD TELL THAT HE WAS HAVING A GOOD TIME. HE ALWAYS ENJOYED A DANCE. HE SAID HE WOULD RATHER DANCE THAN EAT. WELL, AFTER THE LAST QUADRILLE AND CLOSING PRAYER, WE WERE RIDING HOME. THE MOON WAS LOW, SHINING LIKE A BALL OF FIRE THROUGH THE TREES.
"WELLINGTON SAID, 'I'VE NEVER SEEN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, CLEAR MOONLIT NIGHT.'
"I BOLDLY ANSWERED, 'YES. IT WOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT FOR A BUGGY RIDE.'
"WELLINGTON TOLD ME LATER THAT, WHEN I SAID THAT, HIS HEART JUMPED A COG. INSTEAD OF TURNING IN AT MY PLACE, HE KEPT RIGHT ON GOING OUT THE LANE TO THE WEST. IT WAS STILL PLENTY COLD AT NIGHT AND WELLINGTON HAD BROUGHT ALONG A HEAVY QUILT. I PULLED THE QUILT AROUND US, AND OF NECESSITY SLID OVER CLOSE TO HIM. HE TOLD ME LATER THAT WHEN I DID THAT HIS HEART JUMPED TWO COGS. AT THE SUGAR CREEK LANE, WELLINGTON TURNED SOUTH AND WENT DOWN THROUGH THE BOTTOMS. NOW I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU ALL THE DETAILS. IT'S ENOUGH FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT 'ERE WE RETURNED TO MY HOUSE WE WERE MAKING PLANS FOR A TWO-ROOM LOG CABIN.
"THE NEXT MORNING I ASKED MY MOTHER WHAT SHE THOUGHT OF ME MARRYING JUSTUS WELLINGTON SEELYE. SHE SAID SHE THOUGHT HIGHLY OF BROTHER WELLINGTON--SHE ALWAYS CALLED HIM BROTHER WELLINGTON--AND IF I WAS SURE I LOVED HIM, AND WANTED HIM TO BE THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN SHE WOULD GIVE HER APPROVAL.
"WE WERE MARRIED IN CHARLESTON ON MARCH 10, 1842. BROTHER CYRUS WHEELOCK MARRIED US. WELLINGTON PURCHASED ONE HUNDRED ACRES OF LAND ON THE BENCH ABOVE NASHVILLE, AND THAT'S WHERE WE LIVED."

DEAR KARL,

I HAVE REVIEWED YOUR EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT OF AUGUSTUS SEELEY. THIS REPORT WILL LIST THE GOAL, SUMMARY OF KNOWN FACTS, AND THE ITEMS RESEARCHED WITH THEIR RESULT. REALIZE THAT I DID CHECK A COUPLE OF THE THINGS YOU DID TO SEE IF I NOTICED ANYTHING ELSE. YOU REQUESTED I STOP AFTER 6 HOURS. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THINGS AND STOPPED AT 7 HOURS. THE REST OF THE TIME WAS WRITING EVERYTHING UP AND THEN ANALYZING IT. THE CONCLUSIONS ARE ON PAGE 7 AND THE TIME TALLY ON PAGE 8. I DISCOUNTED THIS FOR THE LATENESS OF MY REPORT. I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT. THIS IS AN INTERESTING CASE!

REGARDS,

DREW BARTLEY

AUGUSTUS SEELEY CAN BE DOCUMENTS FROM 1774 TO 1784 AS LIKELY LIVING IN OR NEAR TO SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. HE MARRIED MARY BRISBEN (LIKELY BRISBANE) LIKELY IN 1773 WHEN THE CHURCH RECORDS ARE MISSING. THE FAMILY HAD MOVED TO QUEBEC BY 1786 WHEN HE PETITIONED FOR LOSS OF LIVESTOCK AND CROPS IN SARATOGA. THE CLIENT HAS HE IN LANCASTER, GLANGARRY CO., UPPER CANADA, BY 1 SEPT. 1797. HE WAS ENUMERATED IN THE ELIZABETHTOWN CENSUS. THERE IS NO REFERENCE TO HIM AS LIVING AFTER 16 JULY 1804.

AUGUSTUS? MUSTER ROLL SAYS HE WAS BORN IN BOSTON. THERE HAS BEEN NO CONFIRMATION OF THIS FOUND IN BOSTON RECORDS. IT COULD ALSO BE THAT HE WAS FROM A SURROUNDING TOWN AND JUST LISTED THE LARGER KNOWN PLACE. THE OTHER SEELEY FAMILIES IN UPSTATE NEW YORK AROUND HIM SEEM TO BE FROM THE QUEENS CO., N.Y., AREA. THE EARLIEST SEELEY IMMIGRANTS MENTIONED IN ITEM #10 ALL FIT BOTH LOCATIONS. I COLLEAGUE WHO SPECIALIZES IN NEW YORK RESEARCH THAT I CONSULTED SAID HE WAS FAMILIAR WITH A GERMAN ZIELE FAMILY FROM NEW YORK CITY THAT MOVED UP TO POUGHKEEPSIE AND SOMETIMES USED THE NAME SEELEY.

THE FIRST THING TO BE CHECKED IS THE MEMBERSHIP ROLLS OF THE SCHAGHTICOKE CHURCH TO SEE WHEN AUGUSTUS FIRST APPEARS (HOPEFULLY LISTING FROM WHERE) AND WHEN HE LEAVES THE CHURCH. THE CHURCH RECORDS WHICH ARE CONSOLIDATED IN QUEBEC UP TO 1800 (I THINK) SHOULD BE CHECKED FOR THE BIRTH OF THE REST OF AUGUSTUS? CHILDREN. WITHOUT FURTHER DETAILED INFORMATION, IT WOULD BE GRASPING AT STRAWS TO RESEARCH OTHER LOCATIONS FOR AUGUSTUS. THAT ONLY LEAVES THE BIGGER TASK OF IDENTIFYING ALL ADULTS IN NEW YORK, CONNECTICUT, RHODE ISLAND, AND MASSACHUSETTS LIVING AROUND 1740 AND THEN IDENTIFY THEIR CHILDREN (AND THUS ELIMINATING THEM ONE BY ONE). ANOTHER LONG SHOT IS HOPING AUGUSTUS LEARNED HIS TRADE AS HATTER FROM A MASTER IN BOSTON. I HAVE NOT USED THEM, BUT I KNOW THERE ARE APPRENTICESHIP RECORDS FOR THIS TIME IN THE CITY ARCHIVES. REALIZE THAT IN NEW ENGLAND THIS TYPE OF RECORD WAS NOT NORMALLY A PUBLIC RECORD (LIKE IN THE SOUTH).

TO DOCUMENT THE BIRTH OF AUGUSTUS SEELEY AND DETERMINE HIS ANCESTRY.

SUMMARY OF FACTS

SEELEY CAN BEEN RECORDED AS CELY, SEALEY, ZIELEY, AND THEIR VARIANT SPELLINGS.

AUGUSTUS SEELEY, PARENTS UNKNOWN, WAS BORN IN SCHAGHTICOKE, RENSSELAER CO., N.Y., ?NEW ENGLAND,? OR BOSTON, MASS., CIRCA 1739 AND DIED LIKELY IN ELIZABETHTOWN, LEEDS CO., ONTARIO, BEFORE 1811. AUGUSTUS MARRIED MARY BRISBIN LIKELY IN OR NEAR ALBANY, ALBANY CO., N.Y., BEFORE 20 OCTOBER 1774.

THEIR CHILDREN LIKELY BORN IN SCHAGHTICOKE, RENSSELAER CO., N.Y., (1-6) AND UPPER CANADA (7-10):
1. MARY SEELEY, B. 20 OCT. 1774.
2. ELIZABETH SEELEY, B. 2 MAY 1776.
3. ANNIE SEELEY, B. 14 APR. 1779.
4. SARAH SEELEY, B. 16 NOV. 1780.
5. JOSEPH SEELEY, B. 21 MAY 1782.
6. JAMES SEELEY, B. CA. 1784.
7. JANE SEELEY, B. CA. 1786.
8. CARY SEELEY, B. CA. 1788.
9. MARGARET SEELEY, B. CA. 1790.
10. RUTH SEELEY, B. CA. 1792.

PREVIOUS CONCLUSIONS

IMMEDIATE GOAL FOR THIS REPORT

TO FIND ANY PRIMARY DOCUMENT THAT PROVES THAT AUGUSTUS SEELEY WAS IN BOSTON. THE PROVEN EVENTS FOR AUGUSTUS? FAMILY ARE THE FIRST FIVE CHILDREN LISTED IN THE CHURCH RECORDS FROM 1774 TO 1782. THESE CHILDREN ARE ON A FAMILY GROUP SHEET PROVIDED BY THE CLIENT. THERE IS A TIMELINE WITH UNDOCUMENTED EVENTS BEFOREHAND.

IN REVOLUTIONARY TIMES, IT WAS COMMON FOR A MAN TO MARRY BETWEEN THE AGES OF 23 TO 25, PLUS OR MINUS 2 YEARS. THE WOMAN WAS USUALLY 20 TO 23, PLUS OR MINUS 2 YEARS. A WOMAN WHO IS CONSTANTLY HAVING CHILDREN WILL NORMALLY HAVE HER LAST CHILD BETWEEN THE AGES OF 43 TO 45. THERE ARE ALWAYS CASES THAT GO OUTSIDE THE NORM. THE CLIENT?S FAMILY GROUP SHEET HAS CHILDREN BEING BORN FROM 1774 TO ABOUT 1792. THE FIRST FEW ARE DOCUMENTED AND FALL WITHIN THE NORMAL AGE FOR AUGUST TO MARRY AT AGE 34 IN 1773. ASSUMING MARY BRISBIN IS A YOUNG 18 IN 1773, SHE WOULD NORMALLY HAVE HER LAST CHILD IN ABOUT 1789. THIS FAMILY SEEMS ON THE SURFACE TO BE FINE, THOUGH AUGUSTUS IS A LITTLE ON THE OLD SIDE FOR STARTING A FAMILY.

THE TIMELINE PRESENTS A DIFFERENT SCENARIO. IT HAS THE COUPLE MARRYING IN 1760 AND CHILDREN FROM 1761 TO 1783. AUGUSTUS WOULD HAVE BEEN 21 AT HIS MARRIAGE, JUST BARELY LEGAL AGE. AGAIN, IF MARY WERE A YOUNG 18 IN 1760, THEN HER LAST CHILD IN 1783 AT AGE 41 IS REASONABLE.

SO WHICH IS RIGHT? BOTH ARE CHRONOLOGICALLY FINE. SINCE I HAVE FOUND NO PRIMARY EVIDENCE OF THE EARLIEST CHILDREN IN THE TIMELINE (MARGARET B. CA. 1761, CARRIE B. CA. 1762, JAMES B. CA. 1765, RUTH B. CA. 1766, AND JANE B. CA. 1771), I WILL FOCUS ON THE TIME PERIOD FROM 1739 TO 1772 TO FIND AUGUSTUS SEELEY IN BOSTON, OR ANY REFERENCE TO ANY SEELEY FAMILY THERE THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE HIS PARENTS.

SOURCES CHECKED

1. INDENTURES, 1734-1805, AT CITY ARCHIVES. [INDENTURES ARE THE CONTRACTS FOR APPRENTICE?SHIPS.]
SINCE AUGUSTUS WAS BORN CIRCA 1739, I STARTED SEARCHING THESE RECORDS FROM 1748 (HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INDENTURED EARLIER) TO 1771.
THESE RECORDS TURNED OUT TO BE INDENTURES OF THE POOR AS CONTRACTED BY THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR OF BOSTON. THERE WERE NO SEELEYS LISTED.
2. BOSTON ASSESSOR?S RECORDS.
CITY ARCHIVES SEARCH FOUND THAT THEY ONLY HAD FROM 1828 TO THE PRESENT.
BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY SEARCH FOUND RECORDS FROM 1780 TO 1827. WE CONTINUED SEARCHING TO FIND ANY EVIDENCE OF THEM. WE FOUND A SURVEY IN 1889 THAT SAID THEN THAT THE PRE-1780 TAX RECORDS WERE BURNED IN A FIRE.
3. BOSTON RECORD COMMISSIONER?S REPORTS FOR TOWN RECORDS FOR ANY MENTION OF A SEELEY / CELLY BETWEEN 1739 AND 1770.

SEELE, FEARNOT & BETHIA HAD EBENEZER (1695).
SELEY, ABIGAIL, M. 28 MAY 1735, TO ZECHARIAH THAYER OF BRAINTREE.
SELLEY, EDWARD, M. 15 MAR. 1749 AT KING?S CHAPEL TO ELIZABETH SOUTER.
SELLY, DORCAS, M. 2 JUNE 1698, TO GEORGE COURTNEY.
SELLY, JOHN, M. 23 SEPT. 1700, TO SARAH GORY; THEY HAD ABIGAIL (1703).
[NOTE: NO DEEDS OR PROBATE RECORDS LISTED FOR ANY SPELLING.]

CONCLUSION

OTHER THAN THE MUSTER ROLL GIVING AUGUSTUS SEELEY?S BIRTH PLACE AS BOSTON, THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT SUPPORTS A FAMILY LIVING IN BOSTON AT THE TIME NEEDED TO BE HIS PARENTS, I.E. 1739. THE ONLY OTHER LOGICAL CONCLUSION IS THAT HE LIVED IN SOME SMALL BUT NEARBY TOWN TO BOSTON AND JUST LISTED THE LARGEST PLACE NEAR HIM IN THE MUSTER ROLL. THE PRESENCE OF THE SEELEY NAME NORTH OF BOSTON EARLY ON (AS MENTIONED IN THE FIRST REPORT) IS THE OBVIOUS STARTING POINT TO IDENTIFYING AUGUSTUS SEELEY?S PARENTAGE.
